Vendee Globe Choices

On the pontoons people are whispering:   The French boats are almost all using the plans of the architect Guillaume Verdier, making the boats lot lighter, making them faster down the wind. But are those boats reliable enough ?  Alex Thomson, using Farr plans on his Hugo Boss, is more confident than ever finishing this race and benefits gains on long-term (http://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/news/article/2265/alex-thomson-the-french-favourites-won-t-finish.html) .  But don’t forget the severe delamination in the first part of last Vendee Globe making Alex Thomson to pull out the race (http://thistrainisforgourock.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/hugoboss.jpg?w=300&h=186 )

At the end we’ll know the truth.

On the 27th of March 2012 The Twizzle attended the St Barths Regatta

The Twizzle blog writes:

What a terrific Bucket Regatta, with St Barths in all its finery! 47 yachts entered this year with Twizzle being the heaviest ad second longest after the new Heterios (went aground on the first race and did not finish). The yachts were split into four divisions this year and the Peter Craig, the Principal Race Officer, did a terrific job of keeping yachts seperated around the marks. Jim Teeters did a superb job of rating every yacht resulting in the most exciting finishes for many a regatta. The last days race (Around the Island the Wrong Way) was just brilliant, with a Spinnikar start and finish, with Twizzle sailing briliantly, coming in 3rd in its Mademoiselle Class (including all the Dubois designs) and 10th overall, being pipped at the post by just ONE second by Ranger the J Class racing yacht.

At the end of the Bucket Twizzle came 3rd in its class and 12th overall out of 47 yachts - a testiment to Twizzle’s extrodinary Race and Permenant Crew, lead by John Cutter as tactician, Piet van Os as navigator, Yerin Hobsen as Deck Crew leader and Race Crew organiser and not least Captain Gordon Percy of Twizzle on helm!

Racing has improved Twizzle beyond all recognition and it was wonderful to see how calm, professional and effortless the crew was handling this huge sailing yacht in Race consitions. Racing Gybes and kite hoisting were no problem, even on the technically challanging short course on Day 2.

Congratulations to the Dubois designed Lady B on a superbly sailed competation, winning our class outright and coming 2nd overall! Twizzle and crew are looking forward to the Loro Piana Regatta in Sardinia on the 5th June 2012.

Alex chases round-the-world glory in Vendee Globe

ROUND the world yachtsman Alex Thomson waved goodbye to his Hampshire base yesterday as he set sail to join up with his rivals in the Vendee Globe race.

Thomson left Gosport on his 60ft yacht Hugo Boss bound for Les Sables d’Olonne in France ahead of the start of the 30,000-mile solo non-stop round the world race, writes WILL CARSON.

The 38-year-old has competed in the Vendee Globe, regarded as one of sailing’s toughest challenges, twice previously but has never finished it.

His chances of victory were all but ended before the start of the 2008 race when his boat was damaged by a fishing vessel while waiting to enter Les Sables d’Olonne marina.

“This feels like a very positive moment,” said Thomson prior to leaving the dock yesterday.

“We have got a few people on board because we want to avoid the disaster from four years ago.

“This year we are really confident with the boat and the team we have had behind the preparations the last few years.”

Thomson will line up against 19 of the world’s top sailors including fellow Hampshire racers Mike Golding and Sam Davies in the race, starting on November 10.

He first hit headlines in 1999 becoming the youngest ever skipper to win a round the world race, sailing his team to victory in the Clipper Round the World Race.

In the 2005 Velux 5 Oceans race Thomson was rescued from his sinking yacht in the Southern Ocean by Golding.

In July this year, Thomson set a new world record for the fastest solo crossing between New York and Cornwall, completing the course in eight days, 22 hours and eight minutes, smashing the existing record by more than a day.

The new PRB, launched in March 2010, has already won the Europa Warm Up in 2012, the Trophée Azimut, the Rolex Fastnet and the Artemis Challenge in 2011. Vincent was already familiar with wing masts and the combination with the outriggers is easier to use when sailing solo. Everything has been optimized to have a boat that is fast, easy to control and made for single-handed sailing.

Vendée Globe Wins and Performances : Joint third in the 2008-2009 Vendée Globe (after redress given). Winner in 2004-2005

In 1993, for the first Transat Jacques Vabre solo race; Parlier, Peyron and Gautier were among the starting monohull skippers. And so was a young yachtsman sporting a classic haircut who, at the age of 21, was sailing across the Atlantic for the first time on Maitre Coq and who eventually finished the race despite major water ingress. The other competitors praised the exceptional tenacity of the young skipper – who had just had his first taste of offshore sailing – but few of them realized that Riou would win the Vendee Globe some years later thanks to his immense talent.

« Vincent the Terrible », only former winner

At the age of 40, Vincent Riou has become one of the most symbolic figures of the Vendee Globe. His history in that race started in 2000 with his first circumnavigation… on dry land. Riou was then in charge of preparing Michel Desjoyeaux’s PRB and greatly contributed to the Vendee boat’s final victory. The sponsor then chose to trust the young, discreet and gifted man with their monohull for the 2004 edition.

The Brittany-born yachtsman won the race on his very first participation after an epic fight with Jean Le Cam, finishing only seven hours ahead of Le Cam, who called him “Vincent the Terrible”, a nickname that is not unlike the name of a nuclear submarine. Riou then started working on the construction of a new monohull on which he competed in the 2008 – 2009 Vendee Globe. After 57 days at sea, his path once again crossed Jean Le Cam’s as Le Cam capsised off Cape Horn and was finally rescued by Vincent, who damaged his rigging in the process. The mast held on for a few hours but eventually broke before the boat could reach Tierra del Fuego. Riou had to retire but the jury decided to grant him the third place of the race. He is the only former Vendee Globe winner to race in the 2012-2013 edition.

Vendée Globe Wins and Performances : 3rd entry in the Vendée Globe (6th in 2004-2005, retired in 2008-2009)

The gentleman skipper, as Loïck Peyron calls him, comes from Nice. Trained as a veterinary surgeon and with a 3rd-cycle HEC degree, JP has a background that did not suggest a future sailing the seas. Yet, at the age of 36, this experienced sailor decided to change his life and devote himself to his passion for offshore sailing. Jean-Pierre Dick is a man of challenges. In 2002 he took on a considerable one: Competing in the Vendée Globe. A tenacious and ambitious fighter as well as an unusual character, he devoted himself to his new life as an all-out sailor.

2011 Yachtsman of the year 2011

After his first win in the Transat Jacques Vabre (with Nicolas Abiven), JP was at the start of the 2004-2005 Vendee Globe, making his dream come true. A real “DIYer” despite himself (boom broken and repaired, energy problem forcing him to sail the remaining three quarters of the round-the-world race on solar energy only), he finished his first Vendée Globe in sixth position. The skipper of Virbac-Paprec 3 then enjoyed a series of victories, with two new Transat Jacques Vabre races (2005 and 2011), and two wins in the Barcelona World Race (2008 and 2011). In 2011, he earned the recognition of his peers and was voted Yachtsman of the year.

During the last Vendée Globe, as he was leading the race, a collision with a UFO broke his rudders. Despite his attempts to repair them, JP had to resign himself to stop the race. This year, the skipper from Nice is more determined than ever to shine in the 2012 Vendee Globe. This may very well be his last participation, since this man of challenges later intends to sail the oceans he loves so much on three hulls.
